Russell grew up on Newtack Farm, less than five miles from the Square, where his family have farmed for almost 60 years breeding and rearing beef cattle. Jemma’s family have worked their croft between Keith and Mulben for generations. It was her mum’s traditional farmhouse cooking and baking that encouraged Jemma’s passion for good food and still inspires her recipes today.
Many of the cakes served have been created from recipes in Jemma’s granny’s old recipe book, a handwritten jotter, full of no-nonsense farmhouse fare. Both massive food lovers, Square Roots is their way of sharing that passion for taste and flavour with the local community.
